I am of East Indian heritage. Have grown up in Australia my whole life.
As there were not many other Indian/brown people when I was growing up (I am 31 now), my cousins and I latched onto African American culture.
One thing that always struck me when I watched shows like Fresh Prince, was how similar the dynamics of my family was with a lot of black families. We behave the same way, culturally.
I consider Indians a closely related group to Africans, and more of a black race than a brown race.
Mexicans are a brown race. Persians are a brown race.
If you go to India though, you will find that most of the 1.3 billion people there are of a skin tone much closer to black than brown.
In spirit, there are many similarities between Indians and Africans. The macho, patriarchal culture. We eat as a family in a loud and festive way. We love song and dance. We are deeply spiritual.
I think Indians and Africans have more in common at a 'soul' level than they would care to admit.
