There's a California Census Form due again this year. For many decades, census people have instructed me to check the "White" box, when I've protested that I have Armenian Ancestry, because in their minds Armenians are White.

It has been that way for a long time, but there is the option reserved to check the "Other" box as well, and there specifically identify as Armenian. I usually check both the "White" box and I write in "Armenian" in the "Other" box.

In fact, for decades, no one ever questioned it in my local community, ever; so, I was a bit surprised when I first went on the Internet and found a number of people whom doubt it. The problem is that describing anyone as White is a manmade concept, and consequently subjective and illusory.

White means European to most people, I think.

If you tie the term "white" to geographical boundaries and make it a synonym for the concept of European, then in this case that is an tautologically redundant and unnecessary term.

Armenians received a number of privileges (ie real estate acquisitions and farm ownership), early in the 20th Century, because court judges repeatedly judged that Armenians are White.

By 1925, a court case pretty much settled the matter (that Armenians are White) affirmatively for Armenian Americans, for the remainder of the century. The United States v. Cartozian, lasted until the summer of 1925. District Judge Charles E. Wolverton, a Theodore Roosevelt appointee, was tasked with determining whether Cartozian qualified as a free white person as outlined in the eighteenth-century Naturalization Act.

The testimony here adduced would seem to meet the concept essential to eligibility for naturalization under section 2169, R. S., first, that Armenians in Asia Minor are of the Alpine stock, of European persuasion; second, that they are white persons, as commonly recognized in speech of common usage, and as popularly understood and interpreted in this country by our forefathers, and by the community at large, when section 2169 was adopted by Congress, and later confirmed; third, that they amalgamate readily with the white races, including the white people of the United States.

Your own link's information disproves what you are trying to say... it says Armenians were light-skinned, and rather implies Ethiopians have fair Armenian ancestry than the other way around...
