From the first half of the 9th century, when the territory of present-day Northern Macedonia and part of Aegean Macedonia / today in Greece / until the end of the 19th century, it is practically a Bulgarian nation. There are no Serbs. This is what the Ottoman authorities say, as well as maps, travelogues and documents of Western Europeans who have visited or traveled through these lands. Everything that was built after the 9th century was built by the Bulgarians and the Bulgarian medieval state. For the Bulgarians, this is a sacred land for whose freedom rivers of Bulgarian blood have been shed. Her fate, especially at the beginning of the 20th century, has left a bloody imprint on almost every Bulgarian family. Our connection will be restored and the Serbism will be uprooted. The steps are already being made. We will be together again in the next 20-30 years

Bulgarian identity among Orthodox Slavic speakers of Macedonia before Bulgarian Exarchate was not significant https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulgarian_Exarchate
Bulgarian Exarchate started with bulgarization of Slavic speaking Orthodox Macedonians.

Our old folks used to tell us that they were hit by their Serbian teacher at school when they were heard talking in the local dialects. In the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, Macedonians had no rights. The name of the country said enough.
My grandfather, who was born in the 30’s has memories of both the Serbian and Bulgarian armies coming to the village and telling the villagers that they are either Serbs or Bulgarian, depending on the army that rolled through. He also remembers being verbally abused by a Bulgar soldier who told him to “f his mum”. And this is one personal story out of thousands.
