Default GDP Comparison: Nations vs US State Economies

This is a comparison between U.S. states and sovereign states' Nominal Gross Domestic Product based on International Monetary Fund and Bureau of Economic Analysis data. Many of the states of the United States have large gross domestic product (called gross state product) which would rank highly on a list of countries world GDP.

I'm seriously amazed by california. I think india is roughly the same now. its estimated to be 3.2 trillion in 2020 but still its very shocking that a country with 1.3 billion has the same GDP as a state with 40 million people.

I'm more amazed of the fact that Dravidian states in India, despite Dravidians being more darker than their Indo-Aryan cousins in the North, are the most developed states in South Asia on par with Sri Lanka.

nah its mostly cause the north central indian states are mjority agricultural based and land locked. the southern states have shipping ports so they have maritime trading and is heaviliy involved with manufacturing and IT as well. Its all interlinked. Usually coastal regions are the most populous in other populous countries like China, US, Indonesia, Brazil, etc. With India, though its fairly populous throughout the country, the gangetic plain is the most densely populated area and its all landlocked.

There are cultural factors aswell. Look at female literacy, economic activity, age of marriage, tax payment rates, per capita homocides, communal violence levels etc in Karela vs Utter pradesh cities

I always had the feeling that many of the elite of India, many Brahmin or whoever had access to higher education in India, relocated to California in large numbers. The Indians I have encountered here has always been highly educated without exception. Maybe you have a better grasp on India's immigration pattern to the US.

Yeah to california, atleast in areas like silicon valley, its definitely the most elite indian groups whether in terms of wealth or education. Many of them are brahmins but there are many other hindu mid castes and several christians and muslims as well (where majority of these non hindu groups were converts in the past from low castes). The first group of indians to the US were punjabi sikhs and they arrived in the 1890s. they mostly went to fresno valley area and worked as farmers along with mexican americans. there is a decently sized punjabi-mexican community there in central cali i think.

Don't forget about the Gujaratis there as well. In fact, most of the early Indian migrants in Arabia before the discovery of oil were from Sindh, Gujarat and Maharashtra.
