The Departed was a good movie but the most realistic one ever made was Goodfellas not the departed nor movies like The Godfather. I should know my parents are from Hell's Kitchen New York as well as other family members. They were alive during the Irish mafia and Italian mafia warring and working together :

That's a really interesting family history. I bet your parents have some very fascinating stories to tell. From what I've read The Westies were small in number but they sure did a lot of contract murders and other crime. I suppose if you lived there you just minded your own business. Hell's Kitchen is such a famous place.

Yes I've heard about the Westies. I should look at that doco there as it is a very interesting topic to me.

I have some familial connections to the Westies, my Irish side is from Hell's Kitchen. On of my relatives used to be a bookie within the organization.

Yeah, my father has some crazy stories to tell because he not only did he live in the same neighborhood but he frequented some of the same bars as the Westies.

I suppose if you lived there you just minded your own business. Hell's Kitchen is such a famous place.

Yeah, it's crazy though because before DNA science was a thing the Westies used to cut up bodies in bath tubs and remove the body parts from the apartment(s) piece by piece
via trash bags.

I was at a bar, on the West side, named after an Irish gangster called Mickey Spillane's and it basically a gay bar now. That is not a real neighborhood bar anyway IMHO.

I think my grandfather on my mom's side was in the Irish mob but he was just a bookie or whatever taking bets.

Yea I was pretty shocked to learn about some of the not so upstanding people in my family. I have some other connections to different organizations that I can't mention because it's a little more serious. Most my family is from Missouri which was a bastion for outlaws of all varieties. Most people won't believe it but my direct paternal lineage was part of the same militia as Jesse James and the Younger Brothers, idk if they ever my met my grandpa or knew him but they most likely fought together at some point. My uncle had to flee to Argentina after the civil war, the rest fled West for a few generations.

You and JamesBond have a much more colourful family history than myself. I've just started watching the doco and it is interesting. The way Spillane is pronounced is different in Ireland. It would be pronounced Spil-lann in Ireland. It sort of grates on me the way he pronounces it. Anyway all the people look very Irish. Only career was a Gangster, a priest or a cop. Stereotypical Irish-American.

Bookies used to be the big money makers before drugs took hold, now gambling is a lot more legitimate.
