Well actually, it got its independence from Sudan, so there was no direct colonial involvement. Years ago the British were somewhat involved in Sudan, but not much. Sudan had a lot of Arabic influence, but only in the north, not in the south. South Sudan is a remote and undeveloped country.
There are massive swamps, the Sudd, that prevents travelers from the north on the Nile from going to the south. Not even the Egyptians or the Roman army managed to cross the Sudd.

Interesting, I wonder if this is on the radar for China's economic development plans in Africa. The US and China have been sort of competing for influence in 2 different ways across the continent, the US with its military proxies and China with economic development, or debt.
