Rank and file Germans warn EU 'we will not pay for lazy EU nations...'

    26th April 2020

RANK and file Germans have reacted furiously to Chancellor Angela Merkel's announcement that Germany would have to pay even more into EU coffers in the wake of the coronavirus to prop-up the ailing Brussels project.

Germany has long been the biggest contributor to the EU, coughing up a massive €13.4Bn in 2018 and each German pays the highest proportion of their wages to to Brussels of all the Europe Union member states. On Saturday Mrs Merkel warned she expects a higher German contribution to the EU budget because of the coronavirus pandemic and added she was rethinking plans for the upcoming European Council Presidency where she said the focus would be on economic, climate and environmental issues.

In a video podcast the CDU boss said a massive European economic stimulus package was needed and added: “In which Germany will also have to do much more than was previously the case".

She called the coronavirus pandemic a huge challenge and said: “Europe is of course even more important in such a situation than in normal times.

"Over the next few weeks and months it will be a matter of showing that we belong together, that we will deal with the damage, the economic consequences of this crisis and that we want to do everything possible for Europe to grow together in this situation.”

But her comments triggered an immediate and fierce response online – indicative of a nation tired of propping up struggling nations and a struggling institution.

On Twitter a quote from Joschi Fischer indicated that some Germans felt their hard work and discipline was being milked by other parts of Europe. The quote said: “Germany is a problem because the Germans are more diligent, disciplined, and more talented than the rest of Europe (and the world). This will always lead to 'imbalances'.

Had enough! Ordinary Germans voice complaints about bailing out EU

"However, this can be counteracted by diverting as much money as possible from Germany. It doesn't matter what it's for, it can also be radically wasted - the main thing is that the Germans do not have it.”

Another tweeter called @undogmat_LINKE called for EU reform and said: “Do ALL pay a higher contribution or again ONLY Germany? #EU Reform now.”

Hannes77022932 said the hike in taxes to prop-up the EU was less to do with coronavirus than the need to fill the gaping financial hole left by Britain leaving the EU.

Accusing Mrs Merkel of political sleight of hand she said: “Oh, not because the British money is missing? Who does she really want to hide?”

And Lorenz Okon took a swipe at less successful EU nations claiming Brussels was turning Germany into the benefits office of the EU.

He said: “Italy could adjust the very low inheritance tax and other taxes to the higher German level but instead Mrs Merkel, who has once again forgotten the oath of office, is making sure that the hard-hit exporting nation of Germany mutates into a social welfare office for the EU!”

While Michael Bader simply said: “Certainly, Germany and France are the paymasters of the EU.”

The tweets indicated that many Germans were running out of patience with both the EU and Mrs Merkel's CDU.

The Chancellor agreed broad aid packages at an EU summit on Thursday.

A €500Billion package was agreed at a meeting on Thursday.

Mrs Merkel said: “The package really needs to be in place by June 1st.”

She added the €500Billion support measure was to combat the acute consequences of the Corona crisis for member states, companies and workers but added: "But that's not enough. We need an economic stimulus package after the crisis. Even after the crisis has ended the economic damage will be great.”

Germany takes the helm of the European Council in July.

Mrs Merkel said: “It will run differently than we had planned. And it will be clearly shaped by the question of combating the pandemic and its consequences."

Mrs Merkel is in a weak coalition govt.

    - Merkel’s conservative Christian Democrats came home first in the election in the western state of Hesse, but polled just 28 percent of the vote, an exit poll for broadcaster ARD showed.

    - That marked a huge drop from the 38.3 percent the CDU won at the last Hesse election, in 2013.

    - The CDU’s poor result in Hesse, after its sister party in the state of Bavaria, the CSU, suffered its worst result there since 1950 two weeks ago, may turbo-charge a debate about who succeeds Merkel and when.

    - Merkel’s weakness at home may limit her capacity to lead in the European Union.

Hard working nations who are responsible with their spending (such as the Netherlands and Germany) are being punished by the EU. They keep having their money and national savings taken away from them to pay for irresponsible EU states.

They already pay a lot in contributions to the EU budget, and also they have taken in and funded more than their fair share of mass migrants from MENA nations to the EU.

Either southern, central, and eastern EU states will need to start paying a lot more money in taxes and contributing more to the EU budget and also taking their fair share of mass migrants to the EU, or funding cuts should be made to them so that northern EU states aren't forced to pay even more money into the EU budget.

EU question aside, this shows the old German arrogance raising its ugly head again. So they believe to be more diligent and talented than say, Scandinavians or Finns? Old stock New Englanders or Swiss or Japanese? I don't think so. And even if it were true, such gratuitous statements don't do them much credit, after all it's not the Northern European nations that are causing the problems they mentioned (assuming the Germans don't carry any responsibility themselves). So why offend all Europe (and the world) when they have an issue with some specific countries?

EU crisis: Brussels fears multiple countries will QUIT bloc amid backlash against Germany

    11th May 2020

The EU is teetering on collapse, according to a leading European Union historian, who fears that countries will consider quitting the bloc in the wake of coronavirus as tensions grow.

Senior figures inside the EU fear multiple exits will rock the bloc in the wake of its failed coronavirus response. A leading EU historian Kiran Klaus Patel told CNBC that it remains possible that Spain, Italy and Greece could all launch their own EU exit referendums, in the wake of bitter rifts inside the bloc. This comes amid an unprecedented economic crisis inside the EU, as the bloc braces itself for a "recession of historic proportions" this year.

The coronavirus pandemic expected to cause a 7.4 percent drop in economic output, which could leave "permanent scars" on member-states.

There are growing rifts inside the bloc over how to deal with the crisis, with leaders in France, Italy and Spain warning that denying aid to states badly hit by coronavirus would risk tearing the EU apart.

This week, Spain's deputy Prime Minister Pablo Iglesias warned the European Union that the bloc may not survive the coronavirus pandemic.

However, a ruling in Germany this week has threatened to torpedo potential bailouts for EU members-states.

Germany's top court stunned EU leaders this week after claiming that the EU's own laws were not legally binding in Germany.

In response, the highest court in the European Union lashed out at the German constitutional court ruling.

There are fears in Brussels that this row could ignite a series of anti-EU movements and legal challenges against EU authority and economic agreements.

Mr Patel told CNBC: "This is the biggest crisis in the history of European integration.

"It was not prepared for this crisis to come and it's powers are very limited in fighting coronavirus.

"Over the past few weeks, it has created a few measures to overcome the situation and rescue the project of the EU."

The CNBC host questioned: "Do you think those measures will be effective? That when we come through the other side of this, we won't be talking about the Italians or the Greeks or the Spanish planning their own exit referendums?"

Unelected EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen attacks the German court and says the EU law is supreme.

    The EU is crumbling.

Von der Leyen: ECJ always has final word on EU law

The EU Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen has spelt it out plainly: “the final word on EU law is always spoken in Luxembourg”.

It comes after Germany’s Constitutional Court ruled that the European Central Bank’s bond buying scheme contravened German law.

The European Court of Justice hit back aggressively, saying: “In order to ensure that EU law is applied uniformly, the Court of Justice alone – which was created for that purpose by the member states – has jurisdiction to rule that an act of an EU institution is contrary to EU law.”

And now Von der Leyen, the former German Defence Minister, has said: “The recent ruling of the German Constitutional Court put under the spotlight two issues of the European Union: the Euro system and the European legal system.

“We take good note of the clear statement of the European Court of Justice of 8th May.

“In the same vein, the European Commission upholds three basic principles: that the Union’s monetary policy is a matter of exclusive competence; that EU law has primacy over national law and that rulings of the European Court of Justice are binding on all national courts.

“The final word on EU law is always spoken in Luxembourg. Nowhere else.

“The European Commission’s task is to safeguard the proper functioning of the Euro system and the Union’s legal system.

“We are now analysing the ruling of the German Constitutional Court in detail. And we will look into possible next steps, which may include the option of infringement proceedings.

“The European Union is a community of values and of law, which must be upheld and defended at all times. This is what keeps us together. This is what we stand for.”

You either run your own affairs or remain in the EU and are subject to the European Court of Justice. How many other countries will end up joining the UK outside?

If the EU was like a burning building, then there would be no way to enforce the 1.5 meter rule with everybody scrambling for the exit.
