He was told by his mom that there are a small number of familial clans that stuck together in Mauritius and intermarried for generations. Perhaps that's what happened with his family.

He looks predominately Southern Chinese. His family speaks Mauritian Creole but is also fluent in French. They have very thick 'French' accents when speaking English.
