Why did Italians make better western movies than Americans?

For example: The Good the Bad the Ugly, For a Few Dollars More, My name is Nobody, Once Upon a Time in the West etc all of them italian movies and the best western movies of all time. I don't really understand why they do it better because the american film industry is the best in the world on average and much bigger than any other.

Think about German Karl May and Winnetou, legendary western tale and man himself never visited America.

Better? I don't think so. Spaghetti Westerns just have their own unique style, just few of them are really good.

To answer the original question: Because it had better base. Few top Hollywood actors combined with top Italian actors (who are better schooled) are better than few top Hollywoods actors and bunch of amateurs (Hollywood Westerns). Talented Italian directors make good use of funny steretypes, Italian way of seeing live in West and smart plot twists. Oh, and I also forgot about music: Ennio Morricone is f*cking genious.

Spaghetti Westerns are really only relevant today. As for "only few are really good", I can say I don't know any non-Italian Western of the pre-1980 era.
