For me, it's the other way around: I notice that there usually is a problem with the battery after a year or so, so I now opt for models that allow for the phone battery to be replaced. With laptops: I really don't care because I tend to use it for internet and study stuff - not for gaming.

Since you are not involved in development (there is no need for a powerful CPU for compilation and virtual machines) and you do not play (there is no need for a hybrid video card), but you use Linux, then the task comes down to finding compatible hardware and not a very big price?

So far it's all going rather easy. My flatmate installed Linux and I have been using it since. It seems to be me that Linux is thus compatible.

I'm writing from my wife’s PC (yes, she plays games and studies the design of living quarters quite seriously) - she doesn’t want to go anywhere from Windows 7 even at gunpoint. I think that when her software stops working under 7, only then negotiations will succeed.

I have no real wish of ever going back to Windows.. but maybe.. just maybe one day.

Nobody says that Linux is good - it is just the least bad (for some categories of citizens, mostly with tech background). Here is an interesting instruction, the author quite successfully tries to turn the server Win 10 into a desktop - https://www.windowsworkstation.com/win2016-2019/
