Irish mixed heavily with the Italian and Polish catholics, also with German catholics. They all mixed and intermarried in the big northern cities since they go to the same churches. In the 1930s American cities were divided up among ethnic lines.

If I know that the Irish, they mixed mainly with other Catholic Europeans.
But if I am speaking that not many Protestants mixed with other European or non-European ethnic groups, the English only mixed with themselves.

They didn't mix with non-whites, but in the 19th century mass European immigration changed the demographics from primarily British to a nation that was overall diverse with many many ethnic enclaves. Take the Midwest for example; Scandinavians, Polish and Germans had literal ethno-religious communities that they created. The English have long ago lost any rightful claim to America. Because of the historical change mentioned, and with the formation of the American identity which has taken place for hundreds of years through mixing.

People of English heritage for instance are a very small minority now in New England thanks to Irish, Italian, and Portuguese immigration to that area. How many English Pennsylvanians? Not many there. Only area that has retained Anglo-Saxon identity would be the southern states.

Even on 23&Me the east coast is where a lot of my matches are situated especially in the typical Irish areas like Massachusetts but also Chicago. Not so much the southern states.

Both Confederate and Unionists had many Irish people, the difference was that New York and Boston (territories loyal to the Union) were the main ports of arrival for Irish immigrants, so the union army not only had densely populated territories Also received every week thousands of immigrants who joined the army in exchange for resources and citizenship.

And drafted against their will which is why there were draft riots in NYC. Irish got tired of it. Protestants with money could buy thier way out of Civil War service and they did. Lincoln needed that money for the war.

I have researched and many African-Americans have Irish surnames and that some Native American-White mixes have it too, but why did the Irish mix more than other European groups like the English and Germans?

The Irish may have been forced to mix in some instances with blacks , in the past, to create a better kind of slave. However, the Irish also mixed with Italians and Germans. When the Irish mixed with the Germans that mix could be remixed into the native WASP stock creating a new kind of WASP.

The real reason the Irish are not hated upon and forced into the same category as blacks, nowadays, is because they proved to be more assimilable than Southern Europeans and Slavics so the focus had to lay off the Irish in America because now there were spaghetti nigger dagos, Greek monkeys, and chink gook slavics to deal with etc...
