    Default Türkçe

Inspired of two other threads i want to start one where we can ask and state the origins and meanings of turkish terms/words. Its known that due the history Turks included foreign word in their vocabulary. From pure Göktürk-Turkic, Oghuz Turkic to early Anatolian Turkish, Ottoman Turkish and nowdays Turkish or Turkey Turkic some things were chanced. The nowdays spoken isnt „invented“ like many western and fundementalists claim, it was always spoken by ethnic Turks in Balkan, Anatolia and many other parts of former Ottoman State. Although they are variations inside Turkish and there are terms which we can’t find in other languages, neither persian, arabic or turkic languages. Maybe some of you are interested in to this thread. I’ll start with bibi, what means aunt or „hala“ in turkish. Do someone know from which language it could come?

My grandma says instead of hala bibi. For example she once told her family story and she said „... o bibikızıydı... bibinin çoçuğudu...”

I guess it's Turkic since TDK didn't mention any foreign language origin. Bibi is also used in Turkmenistan, which would strenghten the argument in favour of a Turkic origin.

Even though, it's origins seems questionable. Some websites suggest it could be Armenian or Persian but I would simply trust TDK more

Yes i only found it in turkmen language. It sound more iranic for me, but neither persian or other iranics(for example kurds) use it.

    Origin & history
From Ottoman Turkish بی بی‎ (bîbî), from Persian بی بی‎ ("bi-bi").

My father side uses bibi as well instead of the word “hala”. In Old Turkic, bübi means “lady, miss” so probably bibi comes from bübi.

But I am not sure since I have never heard of this word in my mother side. The word doesn’t exist in West of Turkey.

Bu arada nerelisin? Benim baba tarafım Erzurumlu, belki kullanılan bölgelerden yola çıkarak kökenini daha iyi ayırt edebiliriz.

I asked my grandmother and she knows the word bi-bi for aunt too. Her dialect is a hybrid of Azeri & Afsharoid

    https://tr.wiktionary.org/wiki/bibi

The word exists in Azerbaijani, Turkish (Eastern dialects) and Chagatai so it's most likely Turkic.
