Tanzania’s President John Pombe Magufuli may cause global scientists to return to the drawing board and rethink their theories and conclusions on Coronavirus testing.
Disturbed by the growing numbers of confirmed Covid-19 cases in his country, the President suspected there must be something not right with the testing.
According to President Magufuli, since Covid-19 is a global pandemic, he considers the world to be at war and in such situations there could be instances of sabotage, lapses and errors.
As a polished academic, Magufuli summoned some officers in the country’s security and intelligence organs. He told them that he suspected there was something unexplained about the ever growing cases that tested positive to covid-19.
Fast forward, the Tanzanian president holds a Bachelor of Science in education degree –he majored in chemistry and mathematics from University of Dar es Salaam. These are the subjects he taught.
He also earned his masters and doctorate degrees in chemistry from The University of Dar es Salaam, in 1994 and 2009, respectively.
Magufuli wanted the Intelligence agents to stealthily investigate the entire Coronavirus testing processes at the National Referral Laboratory.
“Go and check these testings because we are at war,” he said.
Under this secretive operation, Magufuli and his trusted security officers came up with an idea of randomly collecting samples from; jack fruit, goat, engine oil, bird, and rabbit. These samples were labeled as human samples and sent to the National Referral Laboratory.
However, these samples collected by Magufuli and his security agents would reach the laboratory without the scientists at the facility knowing their origin.
“The engine oil sample we named it Jabir Hamza aged 30 (male)- the results after testing returned negative,” President Magufuli said.
He added that another sample from Jackfruit was named Sarah Samuel aged 45 (female)- after testing, results returned as “inconclusive”.
“We also sent in samples from pawpaw fruit and named it Elizabeth Anne aged 26 (female)- after testing, results returned as “positive,” The President said.
President Magufuli said another sample was collected from quail bird and sent to the laboratory, the results returned as “positive” with coronavirus
He also revealed that another sample taken from the Rabbit was tested and results returned as “indeterminate” (this is used as a variable that does not stand for anything else except itself).
Magufuli also said samples from a goat were sent in to a laboratory and all tested “positive”.
“That means there is possibility for technical errors or these imported reagents have issues. Probably, the technicians are also bought to mislead,” Magufuli said with suspicion.
Tanzania has recorded more than 480 cases of the virus and 16 deaths at its last update. Tanzania is currently in talks with Madagascar for a potion that cures Covid-19 patients within 10 days.
According to Magufuli, there is something wrong with the testing kits used saying he doubts on the credibility of laboratory equipment and technicians.
“The equipment or people may be compromised and sometimes it can be sabotage…,” Magufuli said in a Swahili speech broadcast on state Television.
Magufuli has also appointed a new Minister for Constitution and Legal Affairs Mwigulu Nchemba. He has directed him to “go and investigate if there is criminal possibility at the national laboratory and take action”.
