That's correct. Question is then, where do you draw the line? Some passages are obviously meant to be a metaphor, some are obviously meant to be taken literally, most are neither. Interpretation is next to impossible when you to overdo this. But that's not important. This particular thing is about Christian Universalism - everyone ending up in heaven is not really what would pass, if this was a court case and Bible would be the report.

Christianity is not about hell or punishment in the first place
The Talmud tells us that the only language the Torah could be translated into elegantly is Greek.

Ofc I do believe in it, a place where all non christians end up.

    Catechism:

We cannot be united with God unless we freely choose to love him. But we cannot love God if we sin gravely against him, against our neighbor or against ourselves . . . To die in mortal sin without repenting and accepting God’s merciful love means remaining separated from him forever by our own free choice. This state of definitive self-exclusion from communion with God and the blessed is called “hell.” (CCC 1033)

Immediately after death the souls of those who die in a state of mortal sin descend into hell, where they suffer the punishments of hell, “eternal fire.” The chief punishment of hell is eternal separation from God, in whom alone man can possess the life and happiness for which he was created and for which he longs. (CCC 1035)

I think the Catholic Church emphasized this part much more and enhanced extented these notions also

because of social and political reasons as Freeroostah mentioned

As for me personally i don't believe in hell as a place of eternal damnation but rather in a state of purgatory a person
passes after physical death which in its duration and intensity depends on how the person lived and what he did and how
is interior or soul is developed when he dies.

One can experience this already during his life time when he does something which goes against his own inner principles he feels a sort
of emptiness or punishment from within himself possible a separation from himself and the divine similar to what you explained which causes
him to repent and become cleansed from his guilt after

I dont think Jesus ever mention "Hell" on His teachings
Actually in Gospels hell mentioned multiple times. Example when Our Lord mention his Second Coming.

The Good people stands to His right side (Kindom of Heaven)
The Sinners stands in His left side and dropped in Hell (Πυρ το εξωτερων)

The whole faith would be useless without hell, a free pass to be the most rotten human being you want to be.
