Hey everyone,
I'm a big fan of Roman history and that time period, and I'm curious if we have any knowledge on who we were in that era.
Slavs did not even become recognizable until the late Roman Empire period, and It's usually been said that Croats are a mix of Slavs + Others, rather than purer Slavs (North Slavs). I don't know if tests or any of the like have been done, but do we know if we had relations to groups from that time?
Many people tend to think of us as Illyrian (except for most Albanians). I've seen good points from the Albanians saying we aren't Illyrian due to Albanians having a lack of haplogroup I (which seems to have spread with Slavs), and due to South Slavs having more of a lack of haplogroup E and J (especially the more west you go). Autosomaly I'm not sure how it goes.
Is it possible we're related to the Getae (Dacians, or even Thracians). I have a lot of close ties (according to my K15 and K32) tests with Hungarians, Romanians, and Bulgarians, and wonder if it's due to the tribes who have lived there. I will note that I don't really agree with my K15 results, they look very odd to me.
According to my true ancestry I have links to Scythians, Proto-Hungarians, and the Boii Gauls. I read on Eupedia that the Scythian samples were probably Scythianized Getae however.
Anyways... I know it's a weird question and a long shot, but I'm curious as to what we might know.
