Sorry, but I don't really believe this. Brazilians usually learn at school that Brazil has been colonized by the Portuguese people who are from Europe.
They also learn that the real natives of the region are the indigenous people. Shouldn't Brazilians know that "White people" aren't native to the Americas?
I don't believe Brazilians usually picture Portuguese people as being blonde and blue-eyed.

1: It's not a subjective opinion of mine, but a fact, to the average Brazilian, Euro looking = Nordish.
2: Yes, everybody here learn at school that we were colonized by Portugal, but that doesn't mean all fully colonial white Brazilians are aware that their looks is Portuguese. Average people don't reflect about these stuffs. To them, having Euro ancestry = recent ancestors from Europe.
Average Brazilians aren't even aware that common Portuguese surnames here, like Silva, Santos, Pereira, Moraes, Costa... are Portuguese/European, they just seem them as Brazilian, European surnames here = Italian (the ones that sound clearly distinct from Portuguese ones), German, etc.
3: Brazilians don't picture Portuguese when thinking of Euro looks, they picture stereotypical Germans, Swedish, etc.
4: Whether some Europeans like it or not, they would never be seen as European looking here.

There were always large numbers of Portuguese in São Paulo state, but the presence of large numbers of Italians and Spaniards in SP did make them stand out less. Below are the numbers from the census of Portuguese-born individuals in each state. In Rio, they were the overwhelming majority of foreign-born individuals, so they were more prominent in the city and its environs. After 1945, however Portuguese immigrants preferred SP to Rio de Janeiro, but even earlier on they were numerous.
Portuguese-Born by census year
1970
RJ: 192.138
SP: 214.021
1950
RJ: 155.070
SP: 151.320
1920
RJ: 200.999
SP: 167.198
