Who did they reference in the article?
"About NFHA
Founded in 1988 and headquartered in Washington DC, the National Fair Housing Alliance (NFHA) is the only national organization dedicated solely to ending discrimination in housing. NFHA works to eliminate housing discrimination and to ensure equal housing opportunity for all people through leadership, education and outreach, membership services, public policy initiatives, community development, advocacy and enforcement."

They reference an advocacy group ('gimme me donations')
There is no doubt some abuse but you have to be naive or stupid to think advocacy groups don't exaggerate to get you to pull out your wallet for them.
The fact alone that the UK is a welfare state and that in the US gov has been sending out $1200 (for adults) and $500 (for children), while making it illegal to kick people out of their homes during the crisis should make people question. If you're poor, you're not living in a neighborhood where you have to pay $1200 a month rent.
On top of that you don't have to spend a 1$ of that $1,200 on food. There are food banks open giving people in need during this crisis.
