Russia should have never colonised North Caucasus though, they have nothing to do with these lands and I know there are plenty of Russians who would like to let these go. About Tatars - they mixed with other (mainly Central Asian and Iranian) Muslims and not with Christians. Many Tatars have roots from Gilan (Iran) and Bukhara (Uzbekistan).

No. Daghestan and Chechen lands gradually became a Muslim from VIIIth to XVIth c. Circassians and part of Ossetia became a Muslim in XVI-XVIIth c. Russian expansion truly started in 1722 when Peter I initiated Caspian expedition. Only Ingush people converted to Islam after Russian annexion (their last High priest converted in 1873).

Iirc the Circassians were entirely Orthodox and the Chechens mostly Pagan up until the 1700s I believe. Then over time they became more Muslim because of Sufi missionaries came and converted them. Like the Naqshbandi
