Element Named After Armenian Scientist Yuri Oganessian

Yuri Oganessian and his team discovered the heaviest elements in the periodic table.

In line with the tradition of honoring a scientist, the name oganesson and symbol Og for element 118 was proposed by the collaborating teams of discoverers at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Dubna (Russia) and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (USA).

In the whole history of science, only 12 persons have received that kind of honor, and only one person was likewise named while he was alive.
