Default Why is Portugal relatively poor?

According to recent data Portuguese GDP per capita is lower than that of countries that are not yet generally seen as highly developed like Poland, Estonia or Czech Republic (all of them joined EU in 2004, many years after Portugal did).

The same goes for HDI (Human Development Index) in which Portugal is 8 places lower than Poland is ranked and Poles themselved often complain that their country is ‘so poor and still backward’. What are the reasons behind Portugal being relatively underdeveloped? Economically speaking the country is much poorer than its big neighbour Spain. Poland has just only communistic bloc, and its long period of impoverishment and returned to capitalism three years after Portugal has already joined European Union.

Because your definition of 'poor' is biased.

I really don't consider Portugal to be poor or underdeveloped.

It is not biased, just based on official data. I did not call Portugal 'poor' just 'relatively poor' if you prefer other choose phrasing 'relatively not rich'.

Because Portugal is relatively isolated and rather far from the economic core of Europe. Much like Eastern Europe.

Portugal is also very rural compared to other Western countries (35% rural).

Your IQ must be lower than 93, that is for sure. Portugal is the only Southern European nation that is above OECD average in all fields (math, reading and science). We are even above countries such as Norway, Austria, Netherlands or Switzerland in certain fields like reading and science.

GDP per capita is not a good indicator for what the average person earns, unless you really believe that people in Poland earn on average 2000 USD dollars a month. Granted I used to live in Poland ten years ago but it was a fairly cheap and inexpensive country for Portuguese standards. My students dorm rental was 60€ a month, which even back there was insanely inexpensive for Portuguese standards (back in 2009/2010 you would not find any rental in Portugal for students bellow 300€).

I checked and here is GDP per Capita from wiki https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...PP)_per_capita :

IMF (2020 estimate, not sure if before or after COVID-19)

    World Bank (based on data)

    CIA (also estimates)

So it seems that the 2020 estimate was enough to raise polish spirits to the point of starting this thread and start saying Portugal was poor
I think it's good that Poland is growing and doing well. Good for you. When your country gets flooded with immigrants you'll know you've reached a good level.

As for HDI, i thought only latin american users cared about it, since it's always them who bring it up when comparing their countries. I have no idea of which position Portugal is in, but apparently it's considered "very high" along with countries such as Chile and Kazahstan (oh and Poland).

Portuguese people do not have a very "Capitalist" mentality. They do not perceive very rich people in a good light. In America Jeff Bezos will be associated with success, hard work, intelligence, vision.... Many times Billionaires are perceived here as corrupt or promiscuous.
