Winners in a rigged game will consider the game fair as long as they keep winning
Molina M, Bucca M, Macy MW. 2019. It’s not just how the game is played, it’s whether you win or lose. Science Advances. 5(7): eaau1156. [FullText]
Many people are prone to believing in the just-world fallacy—the notion that our victories and failures are just and the appropriate reward or punishment to our actions. People like to continue believing the world is fair even when they intellectually know that it is not. They found that although both players could recognize the game was imbalanced, the winner was consistently more likely to still believe the game was "fair" and that their victory was the result of their skill and merit. They suggest this can help understand how people react to inequalities in life. Generally, in a rigged game, their findings show that those who "win" will have a greater tendency to ignore the legitimate complaints of those who lose.
    • In short, it’s not just how the game is played, it’s also whether you win or lose.

Most normal weight people are still overly fat
    [Abstract]
It is disconcerting that the 5th percentile for percent body fat, which should represent the leanest of the population, corresponds to 28 and 17% body fat for women and men, respectively, and that the 50th percentile is as high as 41 and 28%.

Boys put less effort into schoolwork, because effort is viewed as feminine
Heyder A, Kessels U. 2017. Boys Don’t Work? On the Psychological Benefits of Showing Low Effort in High School [Abstract]
Male students show less academic effort and lower academic achievement than do female students. The present study aimed to shed more light on the reasons for why male students show low academic effort despite the finding that this undermines their academic achievement. Results indicate a need to understand the psychological benefits of low academic engagement, especially for male students, and to address the feminine stereotyping of (academic) effort. permalink

Playful children are more likely to be deemed "disruptive" for it if they are boys
[R]esearch shows that playful boys are viewed as rebellious and disruptive by their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade teachers whereas playful girls are not. As a result of observing teachers' attempts to discourage the expression of playfulness, the boys' classmates changed their view of these "class clowns" from initially positive to increasingly negative. The playful boys also developed more negative perceptions of themselves over time. The study, published in Frontiers in Psychology, indicates that teachers' negative perceptions of playful boys in their early school years may forebode a longer-term negative trajectory for the boys as they continue through their formal school years.

Men are more likely than women to commit suicide
Globally 1.8 men kill themselves for every 1 woman. By geographical regions, in Europe the ratio is 4:1 and the Americas it is 3.6:1. The ratio is also particularly skewed in certain former Eastern Bloc (Warsaw Pact) nations and in many of the former Soviet Republics; with Ukraine (7.6:1), Lithuania (7.08:1), Poland (7:1), Georgia (6.4:1) and The Russian Federation (6.4:1) having particularly high ratios, in favor of the men of these countries committing suicide far more often than the women of those countries, as of the latest statistics collected by the World Health Organization of the United Nations in 2016.

Being widowed in one's 20s increases suicide risk
A study based on US national suicide mortality data between 1991 and 1996 has shown that the highest suicide rates were observed for White male widowers aged 20-24 (381 per 100,000, i.e. ~33 times higher than the national average in 1996 and ~17 times higher than married men in that category). For female White widows in the same age group, suicide rate only increased by factor ~4 when going from being married to widowed, and it is not significantly higher than the national average. The increase after divorce is roughly the same for both sexes. permalink

Love at first sight can be predicted by physical attractiveness
Zsok F, Haucke M, De Wit CY, Barelds DP. 2017. What kind of love is love at first sight? An empirical investigation. Personal Relationships. 24: 869-885. [Abstract] [FullText] [Summary]
Researchers attempted to evaluate what contributes to the love-at-first-sight (LAFS) phenomenon using an online study, a laboratory study, and three dating events. They found that the primary predictor was physical attractiveness. The effect size for the physical attraction scores of the LAFS group with the no-LAFS group was enormous (t(91.45) = 15.12, p<.000, d = 3.16), and around 90% of the time, one could correctly predict love-at-first-sight based on the physical attractiveness ratings the subjects reported. Strangers were more likely to report experiencing love-at-first-sight with physically attractive others. In fact, one rating point higher in attractiveness on the scale that the researchers used corresponded with a nine times greater likelihood that others would report that "electric" love-at-first-sight feeling.

The brain reacts to rejection in the same manner as physical pain
Kross et al. (2011) recruited 40 individuals who felt 'intensely rejected' after a the recent dissolution of a romantic relationship. Participants were made to perform two tasks under fMRI scanning: a 'social rejection task' and a 'physical pain task'. The rejection task involved looking at a photograph of their previous romantic partner while performing a visualization task that involved recreating the rejection experience.
    • We demonstrate the specificity of the secondary somatosensory cortex and dorsal posterior insula activity to physical pain.
    • Activation in these regions was highly diagnostic of physical pain, with positive predictive values up to 88%.
    • These results give new meaning to the idea that rejection “hurts.”
    • They demonstrate that rejection and physical pain are similar not only in that they are both distressing—they share a common somatosensory representation as well.

Attractive men are perceived as 'funnier', even when they are actually not
Cowan & Little (2012) conducted a study to assess the degree to which humor influenced sexual selection (particularly in men) as powerfully as it is often touted to in the mainstream discourse surrounding relationships.
    • Individuals who were higher in attractiveness were rated as being funnier in conditions with visual elements whilst individuals of lower attractiveness were rated as less funny than they were rated in the audio condition.
    • If raters do not want attention from less attractive people, they may also be less likely to describe less attractive actors as funny in the video condition, as laughter could be seen as a way to reciprocate interest, which raters in this study may have wanted to avoid.
    • Alternatively, it could be speculated that raters are more attentive to videos of more attractive actors which leads to higher rating of funniness.

Mental disorders significantly reduce men's fertility, substantially more than they do for women
A study in 2013 examining a total of 2.3 million individuals born in Sweden in 1950-1970, using government health care records, found evidence for substantially lower fertility among sufferers of various mental illnesses.
There is evidence that many autistic women go underdiagnosed, which presumably mainly affects women with relatively mild autism, such that they have higher reproductive success than autistic males. Socially awkward women may also seem like "easy prey" for men (Juggernaut law).

High IQ people are more likely to remain virgins longer
Studies assessing the relation of IQ to mating success in America have found that both adolescent men and women have higher rates of virginity when they have high IQ. For instance, a study conducted by Halpern et al. (2000) that used a total sample of N = 11,696 adolescents from two longitudinal surveys. This study would suggest that high IQ impairs both men and women from sexual success, but low IQ does not as substantially impair men's sexual success as it would for a woman.
    • "63.3% of adolescent men and 81.6% of women with IQ scores below average have never had sex and most have had fewer experiences of romantic attraction."
    • "An adolescent with an IQ score of 100 was 1.5 to 5 times more likely to have had intercourse than an adolescent with an above-average score of about 120 to 130."
    • "Controlling for age, physical maturity, and mother's education, a significant curvilinear relationship between intelligence and coital status was demonstrated;adolescents at the upper and lower ends of the intelligence distribution were less likely to have sex. Higher intelligence was also associated with postponement of the initiation of the full range of partnered sexual activities."

Cluster-B personality disorders lead to 3.5x as many sexual partners and more offspring
Guitiérrez et al. (2013) conducted a study to determine if the various personality disorder clusters—Type A (Schizoid, Odd), Type B (Narcissistic, Anti-social) and Type C (Avoidant, OCD)—were solely detrimental in terms of life outcomes for the individuals with these personality disorders (PDs), or if they instead presented their sufferers with various potentially adaptive benefits, such as more plentiful sexual and social opportunities. Namely, those individuals high in type-B personality cluster traits (Narcissism, Anti-Social, Borderline, Histrionic) of both sexes have 3.5x as many sexual partners as low B subjects, with five times as many short-term mates and twice as many long term mates. The researchers also found that those higher in cluster B had 39% more children than those lower in cluster B traits.

Women write 45.0-61.3% of all 'misogynistic' tweets on Twitter about female promiscuity
A data analysis of Twitter in 2014 by Bartlett et al. for the UK 'think tank' Demos demonstrated that women appear to write at least 45% of the "misogynistic" tweets on Twitter, containing words like "slut," "whore," and "rape," almost equal to the amount attributable to men. A later analysis by Brandwatch in 2016, examining 64.8K gender related tweets, had the number even higher, with female accounts producing 61.3% of tweets containing the slurs "slut" and "whore".

Women have a greater anti-women bias in scientific peer review than men
Towards this end we asked a sample of subjects, mostly economics majors, to evaluate a paper written by mixed-gender couples, indicating that it was (co-)authored by a “female economist”, “male economist”, “young female economist” or “young male economist” or giving no information about the author at all. While age factor played no role, female authors appeared to be seen as less competent than males, in that subjects (being incentivized to give their best judgment) less often believed that their papers have been published. This effect did not interact strongly with the gender of the subject.

There are now 70 million excess men in China and India who will live and die without partners
Denyer S, Gowen A. 2018. Too many men: China and India battle with the consequences of gender imbalance. Washington Post. [News]
A growing epidemic of involuntary celibacy is sweeping India and China as these countries grapple with an excess of 70 million men who will be unable to find a female partner, caused mainly by the widespread sex-selective abortion of female offspring. For perspective, 70 million is 2.9x the population of Australia, 1.9x the population of Canada, and 1.1x the population of Britain. These excess men broadly report suffering tremendously from loneliness and lack of purpose. It is feared they may come to represent a destabilizing force in society, as they feel they have nothing to gain or lose.
    • The consequences of having too many men, now coming of age, are far-reaching: Beyond an epidemic of loneliness, the imbalance distorts labor markets, drives up savings rates in China and drives down consumption, artificially inflates certain property values, and parallels increases in violent crime, trafficking or prostitution in a growing number of locations.

Across Europe, for both genders combined, Europeans are most desired race online
Potarca G, Mills M. 2015. Racial Preferences in Online Dating across European Countries. European Sociological Review 31(3). [FullText]
To assess racial preferences in Europe, researches analyzed anonymized profile and preference information of users registered at the eDarling online dating site. In an agreement with the company, data was accessed for all users in September 2011. Researchers performed their analyses on a total pooled sample of 58,880 heterosexual members drawn from an original sample of 876,658 heterosexual site users.

    • A hierarchy of preferences emerges among both Europeans and minority groups. Europeans are the most preferred group and generally less willing to be matched with those from other races. In fact, unlike initially predicted, online daters of all racial backgrounds are more open to dating Europeans than their own group.
    • Hispanics and Asians hold intermediate rankings, and finally, Arabs and Africans are the least preferred.

Ugly people are more likely to become criminals
Mocan and Tekin (2006) performed an analysis of outcomes from the Add Health (National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health), a longitudinal study of US adolescents for the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), an American nonprofit research organization committed to unbiased economic research.
    • Consistent with previous research (Hamermesh and Biddle 1994, Biddle and Hamermesh 1998), we find that in our data set beauty is positively related to wages. We also show that beauty is positively related to the scores received on an adult achievement test, which suggests that being an unattractive student in high school may have hindered human capital development -- possibly through teacher and peer interactions.
    • In case of males, unattractive individuals are about 1 percentage point more likely to commit robbery, and 1.7 percentage points more likely to sell drugs in comparison to average-looking males. Very attractive males are 4 percentage points less likely to sell drugs.

Children trust attractive adults more than unattractive adults
Bascandziev I, Harris PL. 2014. In beauty we trust: Children prefer information from more attractive informants [Abstract] [News]
A total of thirty-two children aged between 4 and 5 years old were shown twelve photos of white women aged between eighteen and twenty-nine years old. The images had been previously selected, via a group of forty undergraduate students, from fifty-six original images. Only those images that were rated lowest (unattractive) and highest (attractive) were selected for the children's viewing. The results showed that more children, especially girls, selected the attractive face initially and both boys and girls were more likely to believe the answer given by the more attractive face. "The gender difference could relate to boys not paying as much attention to the initial presentation of the faces or other research has pointed to the fact that females have superior face perception.

Living with a step-parent is the greatest single risk factor for child abuse
Daly & Wilson (1988) presented an examination of the causes of child homicide through the lens of evolutionary psychology in their book Homicide. They found that an American child living with one or more substitute parents in 1976 was 100 times more likely to be killed than a child living with its natural birth parents (Bachrach, 1983). Similar trends were also discovered in Canada (Burch, 1985) with a child living with a stepparent having a 70 fold increase in risk of being killed if it lived with a step-parent. An examination of other data also found a 40-fold increase in risk severe child abuse in a Canadian sample (Daly & Wilson, 1985). permalink

There is no significant gender disparity in STEM graduates by sex in the U.S
Olson R. 2014. Percentage of Bachelor’s degrees conferred to women, by major (1970-2012). [News]
[I]n 2012, women earned 40-45% of the degrees in math, statistics, and the physical sciences. Even greater numbers are seen in biology where 58% of degrees were earned by women. Only in engineering women are underrepresented with less than 20%. Women are, however, drastically underrepresented among high achievers.

Countries with pronounced feminist policies have fewer women in leadership positions
Gracia & Merlo (2016) found evidence for rates IPVAW (intimate partner violence against women) being much higher in the Nordic countries than in less egalitarian European countries, and they stated it was highly unlikely this difference was down to greater awareness/increased willingness of women to 'come forward' in these countries. Schmitt (2014) found somewhat contradictory evidence in this regard, he found that women cross-culturally reported initiating IPV more than men, and greater gender equality decreased rates of IPV overall, but moreso in men. permalink

Sanandaji N, 2018. The Nordic Glass Ceiling. Policy Analysis, (835). [Article]
    • Sanadaji noted that 32% of directors and chief executives in private enterprise are women in Eastern and Central Europe, the share is only 13% in the Nordics.
    • Sanandaji points to data that suggests that women are less likely to attain high ranking corporate or managerial positions in welfare states and countries with less economically lassez-faire policies. "It is not in Nordic welfare states that we find most women on top, but rather in the free-market systems that exist in the United States, New Zealand, Australia and other Anglo-Saxon economies."
    • Sanandaji noted that Norway's gender quotas in regards to corporate positions have only resulted in a few women being granted board positions, with Norway having no female CEOs in its 60 largest firms, even after 8 years of quotas favoring women.

    Summary:
    • Longevity: A study of older adults found sex in the years after a heart attack decreased the risk of death by one-third.[19][20]
    • Job satisfaction: People had a better mood and more engaged with their jobs the day after they had sex.[21]
    • Immune system: University students who engaged in sexual activity a few times a week had higher levels of the antibody immunoglobulin A.[22]
    • Self-esteem: People who have sex tend to have higher self-esteem.[23]
    • Reduced blood pressure and stress: Sex reduces blood pressure.[24][25]
    • Cardiovascular health: Men who had sex once a month or less were 45% more likely to contract a cardiovascular disease.[26]
    • Workout: Average sex burns 85 calories (3.6 cal./min.).[27]
    • Relieves headaches: 60% of migraine sufferers and 37% of cluster headache sufferers felt better after sex.[28]
    • Sleep: Sex promotes better sleep.[29]

Incels are also often depressed, e.g. in an informal survey, 59.4% of incels.co users reported to be depressed.[66] Again, whether inceldom causes depression or vice-versa, is unknown but both are plausible. There exists evidence that depression permanently damages brain functions and lowers IQ. Recovery from depression largely restores cognitive performance, but some deficits remain, possibly especially in verbal performance.[67][68] Some of this may be caused by permanent shrinkage of the hippocampus, possibly caused by cell death due to stress.[69]

Men without prospects for sex or relationships may be less likely to feel inclined to cooperate with the rest of society and may even become violent. Indeed there are various indications enabling more men to get sex by enforcing monogamy decreases violence and conflict: Strong pair-bonding between males and females is thought to be accompanied by a dramatic reduction in the male-to-male conflict over mating and an increased investment in offspring.[71] Heinrich et al. suggested cultural evolution may have selected monogamy because of its beneficial effects: Monogamy suppresses intrasexual competition and reduces the number of unmarried men, thereby reduces crime rates, including rape, murder, assault, robbery and fraud. By shifting male efforts from seeking wives to paternal investment, normative monogamy increases savings, child investment and economic productivity. By increasing the relatedness within households, monogamy reduces intra-household conflict, leading to lower rates of child neglect, abuse, accidental death and homicide.[72] In a cross-cultural study of correlates of crimes in 44 non-literate societies (a people or culture without a written language), monogamous societies had substantially lower rates of theft (r = -.58) and personal crime (r = -.44) than polygynous ones.[73]
