Bristol mayor defends not removing slave trader statue

    June 15, 2020

The directly-elected Mayor of Bristol has defended not removing the statue of slave trader Edward Colston earlier and consigning it to a museum.

The statue of the 17th-century merchant was toppled by Black Lives Matter campaigners during a protest a week ago and thrown into Bristol’s harbour.

Jury urged to be on ‘right side of history’ as Colston 4 trial draws to a close

    Jan 4, 2022

Toppling the statue of a slave trader did not erase history but created it, stated the defence as the trial of the Colston 4 neared its conclusion.

Bristol’s history and the global repercussions of the removal of the bronze memorial to Edward Colston were highlighted as both the prosecution and defence made their concluding speeches at Bristol Crown Court on Tuesday.

Rhian Graham, 30, of Colston Road, Easton; Milo Ponsford, 26, of Otter Close in Bishopstoke, Hampshire; Jake Skuse, 37, of Farley Close in Little Stoke, South Gloucestershire; and Sage Willoughby, 22, of Gloucester Road, were charged with criminal damage following the toppling of the slave trader’s statue on June 7 2020. All four have pleaded not guilty.

UK BLM protesters acquitted over pulling down of slave trader statue

    January 5, 2022

LONDON -Three men and a woman were cleared on Wednesday of causing criminal damage for helping to pull down a statue of a 17th century slave trade magnate and throw it into Bristol harbour in southwest England during the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests.

The bronze statue of Edward Colston, which had long been a source of division in the port city, was hauled down during an anti-racism demonstration, one of the many that swept the globe in the wake of the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Edward Colston statue case sent to Court of Appeal

    13 april 2022

The acquittal of four people on trial for toppling Bristol's Edward Colston statue has prompted the attorney general to contact the Court of Appeal.

Suella Braverman is seeking clarification of the law around what can be used as a defence to criminal charges arising from protests.

She said the Colston case has led to "uncertainty" and asked for clarification on human rights defences.

The referral will not affect the acquittals in the case.

Milo Ponsford, 26, Rhian Graham, 30, Jake Skuse, 33, and Sage Willoughby, 22, were charged with criminal damage after the memorial to the slave trader was toppled on 7 June 2020.
