Cambridge University cannot claim it is a bastion of free speech if it supports Dr Priyamvada Gopal but not Jordan Peterson, according to Sky News host Rita Panahi. Cambridge came to Professor Gopal's defence after the lecturer in postcolonial literature faced a severe backlash after tweeting: “White lives don’t matter. As white lives”. She said this in response to a banner flown over the ground of Premier League football side Burnley, which read "White lives matter Burnley." "The University defends the right of its academics to express their own lawful opinions which others might find controversial and deplores in the strongest terms abuse and personal attacks," the University said in a statement published on Twitter. "These attacks are totally unacceptable and must cease." Ms Panahi said Cambridge cannot claim it supports free expression, since it rescinded its offer of a visiting fellowship in 2019 to Jordan Peterson, who is an outspoken critic of political correctness. "Now, suddenly this professor says white lives don't matter, they are all about free expression, you can say anything you like," she said.
