A Psalm for Our Times

1) Why standest thou afar off, O LORD? why hidest thou thyself in times of trouble?

2) The wicked in his pride doth persecute the poor: let them be taken in the devices that they have imagined.

3) For the wicked boasteth of his heart's desire, and blesseth the covetous, whom the LORD abhorreth.

4) The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.

5) His ways are always grievous; thy judgments are far above out of his sight: as for all his enemies, he puffeth at them.

6) He hath said in his heart, I shall not be moved: for I shall never be in adversity.

7) His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud: under his tongue is mischief and vanity.

8) He sitteth in the lurking places of the villages: in the secret places doth he murder the innocent: his eyes are privily set against the poor.

9) He lieth in wait secretly as a lion in his den: he lieth in wait to catch the poor: he doth catch the poor, when he draweth him into his net.

10) He croucheth, and humbleth himself, that the poor may fall by his strong ones.

11) He hath said in his heart, God hath forgotten: he hideth his face; he will never see it.

12) Arise, O LORD; O God, lift up thine hand: forget not the humble.

13) Wherefore doth the wicked contemn God? he hath said in his heart, Thou wilt not require it.

14) Thou hast seen it; for thou beholdest mischief and spite, to requite it with thy hand: the poor committeth himself unto thee; thou art the helper of the fatherless.

15) Break thou the arm of the wicked and the evil man: seek out his wickedness till thou find none.

16) The LORD is King for ever and ever: the heathen are perished out of his land.

17) LORD, thou hast heard the desire of the humble: thou wilt prepare their heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear:

18) To judge the fatherless and the oppressed, that the man of the earth may no more oppress.

(A Psalm of David.) Unto thee will I cry, O LORD my rock; be not silent to me: lest, if thou be silent to me, I become like them that go down into the pit.

2) Hear the voice of my supplications, when I cry unto thee, when I lift up my hands toward thy holy oracle.

3) Draw me not away with the wicked, and with the workers of iniquity, which speak peace to their neighbours, but mischief is in their hearts.

4) Give them according to their deeds, and according to the wickedness of their endeavours: give them after the work of their hands; render to them their desert.

5) Because they regard not the works of the LORD, nor the operation of his hands, he shall destroy them, and not build them up.

6) Blessed be the LORD, because he hath heard the voice of my supplications.

7) The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him.

8) The LORD is their strength, and he is the saving strength of his anointed.

9) Save thy people, and bless thine inheritance: feed them also, and lift them up for ever.

1) In thee, O LORD, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed: deliver me in thy righteousness.

2) Bow down thine ear to me; deliver me speedily: be thou my strong rock, for an house of defence to save me.

3) For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name's sake lead me, and guide me.

4) Pull me out of the net that they have laid privily for me: for thou art my strength.

5) Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O LORD God of truth.

6) I have hated them that regard lying vanities: but I trust in the LORD.

7) I will be glad and rejoice in thy mercy: for thou hast considered my trouble; thou hast known my soul in adversities;

8) And hast not shut me up into the hand of the enemy: thou hast set my feet in a large room.

9) Have mercy upon me, O LORD, for I am in trouble: mine eye is consumed with grief, yea, my soul and my belly.

10) For my life is spent with grief, and my years with sighing: my strength faileth because of mine iniquity, and my bones are consumed.

11) I was a reproach among all mine enemies, but especially among my neighbours, and a fear to mine acquaintance: they that did see me without fled from me.

12) I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind: I am like a broken vessel.

13) For I have heard the slander of many: fear was on every side: while they took counsel together against me, they devised to take away my life.

14) But I trusted in thee, O LORD: I said, Thou art my God.

15) My times are in thy hand: deliver me from the hand of mine enemies, and from them that persecute me.

16) Make thy face to shine upon thy servant: save me for thy mercies' sake.

17) Let me not be ashamed, O LORD; for I have called upon thee: let the wicked be ashamed, and let them be silent in the grave.

18) Let the lying lips be put to silence; which speak grievous things proudly and contemptuously against the righteous.

19) Oh how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee; which thou hast wrought for them that trust in thee before the sons of men!

20) Thou shalt hide them in the secret of thy presence from the pride of man: thou shalt keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues.

21) Blessed be the LORD: for he hath shewed me his marvellous kindness in a strong city.

22) For I said in my haste, I am cut off from before thine eyes: nevertheless thou heardest the voice of my supplications when I cried unto thee.

23) O love the LORD, all ye his saints: for the LORD preserveth the faithful, and plentifully rewardeth the proud doer.

24) Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD.

1) Rejoice in the LORD, O ye righteous: for praise is comely for the upright.

2) Praise the LORD with harp: sing unto him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings.

3) Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise.

4) For the word of the LORD is right; and all his works are done in truth.

5) He loveth righteousness and judgment: the earth is full of the goodness of the LORD.

6) By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.

7) He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap: he layeth up the depth in storehouses.

8) Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.

9) For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.

10) The LORD bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought: he maketh the devices of the people of none effect.

11) The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.

12) Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.

13) The LORD looketh from heaven; he beholdeth all the sons of men.

14) From the place of his habitation he looketh upon all the inhabitants of the earth.

15) He fashioneth their hearts alike; he considereth all their works.

16) There is no king saved by the multitude of an host: a mighty man is not delivered by much strength.

17) An horse is a vain thing for safety: neither shall he deliver any by his great strength.

18) Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy;

19) To deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine.

20) Our soul waiteth for the LORD: he is our help and our shield.

21) For our heart shall rejoice in him, because we have trusted in his holy name.

22) Let thy mercy, O LORD, be upon us, according as we hope in thee.

2) For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb.

3) Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.

4) Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.

5) Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.
