New Evidence Supports Modern Greeks Having DNA of Ancient Mycenaeans

    June 22, 2020

New emerging DNA evidence suggests that living Greeks are indeed descendants of the ancient Mycenaeans, who ruled mainland Greece and the Aegean Sea from 1,600 BC to 1,200 BC.

The proof comes from a study in which scientists analyzed the genes from the teeth of 19 people across various archaeological sites within mainland Greece and Mycenae. A total of 1.2 million letters of genetic code were compared to those of 334 people across the world.

Very exciting news. So we have 19 more Mycenaeans. We only had 4 to go on so far. This will give us a better understanding of the very first Greeks. Still, no Classical Greeks though. However, the individuals are from different archaeological sites. So perhaps we can get a scoop of the Greeks further North during that time.

Unfortunately it's just the previously published study ...

    https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2017...nt-dna-reveals

[...]The ancient DNA comes from the teeth of 19 people, including 10 Minoans from Crete dating to 2900 B.C.E. to 1700 BCE, four Mycenaeans from the archaeological site at Mycenae and other cemeteries on the Greek mainland dating from 1700 B.C.E. to 1200 B.C.E., and five people from other early farming or Bronze Age (5400 B.C.E. to 1340 B.C.E.) cultures in Greece and Turkey. By comparing 1.2 million letters of genetic code across these genomes to those of 334 other ancient people from around the world and 30 modern Greeks, the researchers were able to plot how the individuals were related to each other.[/...]

I think this is the study from 2017.

It is, and we've already established the fact that the mainland Greeks are over 70% Mycenaean Greek genetically on average. The average Cypriot is around 30% Mycenaean Greek.

I don't like these kind of statements. If there was a substantially sized civilization in Greece that would have numbered probably in the hundreds of thousands and existed only a few thousand years ago it would be virtually impossible that people who live in Greece couldn't count them as people they are directly descended from to some extent. It is just virtually impossible that Modern Greeks could not have any ancestors from ancient Mycenaean individuals and you really don't need any genetic evidence to say that.
