It was positive for the English, as it helped consolidate their stronghold in the world. But it was relevant, to a smaller extent of course, and before the Norman invasion, in the Anglo-Saxon times. The time of the reign of Alfred the Great is an indicator of that. Also, before the Norman invasion, the Anglo-Saxon produced many scholars, like Bede.

I regret the death of Anglo-Saxon England as I love it, but there's no point dwelling on ancient history or what should have been, especially for something so crucial to all subsequent English/British Isles history and everything that now exists. It's an important part of the tapestry of our history, neither good or bad at this point.
I'm all for a policy of cultural re-Anglicisation though.

Make England Celtic again. Rid them of Anglo-Saxon and Norman invaders! King Arthur!
