Spanish: the countries where our language is most studied

It is estimated that some 7,000 languages are spoken in the world.

But most people only use a small number of them to communicate, either because it is their native language or because they use it as a second language.

In the list of the most widely spoken languages in the world, the first place is for Mandarin Chinese with 950 million speakers.

And the second place is occupied by Spanish with 577 million people, reports the Cervantes Institute in its study "Spanish: a living language" of 2018.

In which countries is Spanish spoken outside of Spain and Latin America?
This number includes speakers of Spanish as their mother tongue, those with limited proficiency and students of the language as a foreign language.

According to the report, there are 21 countries that are Spanish-speaking and more than 30 in which Spanish is spoken although it is not considered the official language.

And there is a group of countries that have a percentage of the population that studies Spanish as a foreign language.

Who are those who choose to learn Spanish?

The English language remains by far the most studied in the world.

But Spanish disputes with French and Mandarin Chinese for second place in the classification of languages most studied as a second language.

According to the Instituto Cervantes, which is the institution specialized in teaching Spanish worldwide, 21.8 million people are Spanish learners in 107 countries.

To give an idea, this number is approximately equivalent to the sum of the population of Chile (18.3 million) with that of Uruguay (3.4 million).

Where is Spanish studied in the world?

As the data is not complete and difficult to calculate, the institute clarifies that the real demand for Spanish would be at least 25% higher than those 21 million people.

And interest in learning Spanish is particularly important in the two main English-speaking countries: the United States and the United Kingdom.

In the United States, Spanish is the most studied language at all levels of education with more than 8 million students.

What is the easiest language to learn if you are Spanish-speaking? And the most difficult?
Brazil is the second with 6.1 million and France, the third country with 2.5 million apprentices.

They are followed by Italy, with 687,000 students, Ivory Coast, with 566,000, Germany, with 554,000 and the United Kingdom, with 519,000.

The Instituto Cervantes offers through its network of centers around the world a wide range of Spanish as a foreign language courses.

General language courses are proposed, organized by levels according to the Common European Framework of Reference, and courses tailored to specific needs are also offered, or, for example, language courses for specific purposes. Both are also in line with the Instituto Cervantes (PCIC) curriculum plan.

In addition, the centers offer general Spanish language courses on the Internet through the Virtual Spanish Classroom (AVE), either as a resource for distance learning, either in semi-face-to-face courses or as a complement to the regular courses in the classroom. face-to-face.
