Lasse Viren was truly great runner indeed. His records in 5000m (13.16,3) and 10000m (27.38,4) don't tell the real picture of his level. Like was quite common in his era, he was a racer and did not run after records. In reality he was deffo sub 13 minutes (in 5000) and sub 27 minutes (in 10000) runner, if only he had measured his trough output in these events (in optimal pacing conditions). His winning time in 72 Olympics, 5000m, was 13.26,4, in a race where the pack basically walked the first few laps. His 10 000 meter record is from the famous Olympic final, where he fell and still won




I'd argue, that with his ability to run the 3 or 2 last laps with extremely fast pace, in a slowpaced Olympic final, he could still today challenge the Africans. Let's remember that Olympic record in 10 000 meters is still only 27:01.17
