Mehmed II should've converted to Christianity, preferably to Orthodoxy, right after he conquered Constantinople. He had all the power in the world to quell the resulting rebellions here and there. Hundreds of years of strife, conflict, death and devastation could easily have been avoided after that. It's much easier to hold dominion over Europe if you're a Christian.

He could've easily revived Rome and rightfully have used the title "Caesar of Rome" he and his successors so willfully coveted. Today, Hagia Sophia would have stand as the shimmering beacon of Eastern Roman civilization. Together with his Greek and Serb brothers in faith, he'd go on to conquer Jerusalem in the name of Christendom.
