The Russian Orthodox Church has developed plans to construct its own Vatican to the tune of $2 billion in the Moscow region, the Vedomosti business daily reported on Thursday.

Church officials have been in talks with officials in the city of Sergiyev Posad to transform it into the capital of Orthodoxy since 2017. Sergiyev Posad is the location of the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius monastery, considered the spiritual center of the Russian Orthodox Church. Earlier this year, the Church asked President Vladimir Putin to support the project, an unnamed government source told Vedomosti.

Russian Orthodox Church cuts ties with Constantinople over Ukraine

The Russian Orthodox Church has effectively cut diplomatic relations with the Patriarchate of Constantinople, which has authority over the world's 300 million Orthodox Christians.

The Patriarchate of Constantinople had to leave Istanbul if you ask me. At least the official seat. They should have moved it to Mt. Athos.

Yes it is their right, Russia is main Orthodox country in the world with also the largest Orthodox population. Nevertheless it seems like Greeks have a problem with it. They had the 2018 Schism with Russians. Likely biggest Schism Greeks had after the 1054 Schism with Latins.

The Church of Constantinople, which heads the Orthodox Churches today, can hardly play the role of an Orthodox center. Given that it is territorially located in a country whose official religion is Islam, and the patriarch of Constantinople, who is the first among equals, is appointed by the Turkish state and it is mandatory that he be a citizen of Turkey.

Agreed. Let those priests leave Constantinople and find a basis in Russia or Greece. Or they can stay there, but not as an official seat. It doesn't bother Greece. No need to invest political capital in that. In fact, it is Istanbul which is essentially loosing a part of its cultural heritage. Not Greece, nor the Orthodox world. Overall, the Orthodox Vatican should be stationed somewhere else.

They can also convert Hagia Sophia into a mosque for all I care.
