    I usually start by speaking Swedish and if they don't understand I/we switch to English. I can understand Danish or Norwegian quite well, but I would never attempt to speak Danish or Norwegian (unless I'm making fun of it).

    Not heard that, though regrettably I wouldn't be entirely surprised. In fact, I know in the Netherlands there are real concerns of English basically wiping out Dutch in higher education in particular.
