Default Danes, Swedes and Norwegians: which language do you use when visiting each others' nations?

    (1) English as a 'neutral' language.
    (2) The language of the country in question.
    (3) Your own language, but spoken more slowly than usual.

They do not understand each other from what i’ve seen. They use english to communicate. There are similarities but they’re not mutual intelligibility

I suppose it usually goes well if I ease down on the dialect and speak more slowly and formal like how they speak in Eastern Norway (typically spoken on TV). That goes for them as well. But, I don't interact with them that much as I don't travel much to neither country and there are not that many of them living in this part of the country. Danes can be quite tricky when they mumble too much, or start with their weird number system that I have never bothered to get acquainted with.

Norway has a wide range of dialects, with a greater difference than in Denmark and Sweden. Sometimes it can be difficult to understand, in some cases impossible. I attended a course a few years ago and the leader of the course who came from a place within valleys and mountains of the country. Someplace up towards the north. Whereas I am from South-West. It was annoying that he couldn't adjust even a little, because I saw many confused faces around me. There have been other times I've encountered people talking and I can't make out what they are saying as it sounds like incoherent gibberish.

It may be easiest with English, but it seems everyone prefers to speak their own language due to a conviction we understand each other more than sometimes is the case.

Danish is more difficult than Norwegian.

That might change as I will return to Skåne later on this year. If corona just allows, I'm gonna visit in Denmark regularly. I like the country.

Can you follow all of them easily Draug?

So do you use Swedish in both Denmark and Norway?

I try to use. Over all Finnish Swedish dialect (like woman on the left in video) is quite easy (clear) to others.

Danish, Swedish and Norwegian languages (or dialects) are related to each other as Russian, Belarusian and Ukrainian, or even closer.
But Icelandic and Faroese are much farther from them, it's like Polish and Czech in relation to Russian. Here it is much easier for the interlocutors to switch to English.
Not my opinion, but one friend of mine who is an amateur linguist obsessed with Scandinavia.
