I guess the mushroom species eaten at each site largely depend on local taste and tradition.

Here,( if they are what I think they are), that kind of mushroom is not considered good quality mushroom, it´s edible, but not the best.

We eat Boletus (Edulis, Aestivalis or Pinnicola) but not Xerocomus sp. or Suillus sp. , that are similar .

I know people that eat Xerocomus too, but it´s quite inferior to Boletus taste, and there are many people that confuses each other.

At least in that photo they don't look like Boletus, or at least most of the ones I see.

Yes, it is Xerocomus in the photo. I know a lot of people who pick only Boletus, as they are really superior. That leaves a lot of X. for us They are quite tasty in my opinion, no bitter taste that you can taste in some semi-edible types.

What about Xerocomellus chrysenteron or pruinatus, do you eat those? They are really god for pickling, especially the pruinatus.

You are right, we aren't. Weird, with such similar results. But form what I gathered the phenotype not always reflects the genotype.
