Default In your country, do accents and dialects vary more on a North/South or East/West basis?

In the UK, the difference is more North/South by far. While there is a distinct West Country accent, it is fast disappearing due to education, the media and most of all migration from London and the Southeast.

There are regions where there are more differences between North and South, overall I would say it's more like East-West.

I would say North to South, estern Germans are easy to understand but southern Germans, ok it depends on the region but i really had problems to understand anything when i was in southern Bavaria(Oberbayern).

I thought coastal Venezuelans sound closer to Dominicans, while inland ones sound more like Bogotanos?

uh... nobody in Venezuela sounds like Dominicans. In no region of Venezuela people changes the Rs by Ls and Dominicans and Puerto Ricans (even worst than Dominicans) do.

In the north east of Venezuela (coastal Anzoategui, Nueva Esparta and Sucre) they speak very fast, and do the opposite of Puerto Ricans and Dominicans (they change the Ls in the middle of the words by Rs).

In Caracas and the northern Central region in general (Vargas, Miranda, Aragua, Carabobo), they speak the "standard" Venezuelan accent as known from the Venezuelan soap operas, where they speak a nice accent, but they kind of omit the "S" at the end of the words with that letter in their end. There are also different sub-accents within this Northern Central region "standard" Venezuelan accent, depending on age (spoken by youths versus spoken by more adult people) and social class (high class sifrino accent, versus lower class accent, versus educated accent but not as ridiculously refinated as sifrino).

In Zulia, they use Voseo, and say things like "Andate" (with accent on the second A) instead of "Anda" for example, and say things like "ya vereis" instead of "ya veran". Lara and Falcon speak an accent that is like in-between the "standard" Venezuelan accent from the northern central region and the Zulian accent.

Then the llanos speak a rural accent that is different from the "standard" Venezuelan but also different from the Colombian Andean accents.

Andean Venezuelans are the ones who speak similar to the accent spoken in Colombian Andes, but particularly the accents spoken in Santander and Boyaca.
