In your country, do accents and dialects vary more on a North/South or East/West basis?

You may say North-South but you can also say inland to coastline.

Merchants in the coasts follow the more "common Greek" than mountaineers and I'm not sure if Pontics can be classified as South.

More provincial than anything, but I would say west-east

Finnish: the main difference is in east-west direction but really, north and south also matter a lot. The following is from Wikipedia:

Numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 (mauve) are different western dialect groups and 6 and 7 (blue) the eastern groups. The areas extend outside of the borders (difficult to see) of Finland due to population history and changes in borders. Karelian and Ingrian are commonly regarderd as separate languages but Kven and Meänkieli are more commonly, in linguistics, thought as far-northern dialects that have been separated in the last few hundred years from what became Finland, respectively, to Norway and Sweden. Yellow areas are traditional majority Swedish-speaking areas.

In the Karelian language, the same diphthongisation of long vowels is apparent as in most Savonian dialects (nr. 6 on map), like aa => oa/ua, ää => eä/iä. This probably reflects that they both can be formed from a eastern Proto-Finnish dialect.

Most dialects are intelligible to other dialects. Some of the southwestern ones may be tricky to understand, but speakers of those might have difficulty with Savonian dialects.

The Northern Isles and Hebrides are more different to the mainland. More sing-songy and they pronunciate their words more.

Buuut, MT and Rondonia that are in Amazon and have the same latitude as Bahia have many similarities to accent of Rio Grande do Sul and Paraná which are pretty South.

In this case the East-West Bahia-Mato Grosso is very large. So its complex.
