I really need to visit the rest of Portugal going northward. The farthest north I've been was Porto. The other areas I've been to are Lisboa (plane from NY lands here), a bunch of places in the Algarve (Portimão, Ferragudo, Silves, etc etc.), and Évora in Alentejo. All beautiful, but I want to see the rest.

I think the problem with Beira Alta (or Centro in general) is that for the most part it competes with Norte in what it has to offer, but doesn't have half its branding/marketing, and the region has a relatively small population when compared to Norte and LVT so most people are relatively unaware of its offer/potential. Besides Serra da Estrela a lot of non-locals aren't particularly familiar with its road trips, let alone its nooks and crannies. Even the Turismo do Centro has more offer in the coastal part of the Centro (Beira Litoral) than the interior (Beira Alta/Baixa) if you exclude Estrela.

In a way the geographical/topographic changes between Aveiro-Viseu-Guarda (even though Aveiro is Beira Litoral) is parallel to that of Porto-Vila Real-Bragança, so that doesn't help either. Both are basically the greener/hilly/mountain part of the country with small rural villages in built in stone (granite/schist), old castles and churches, with a fairly good amount of more recent Baroque buildings such as manors or (more) churches. Local diet is also meat-heavy since they are far from the sea, and both regions get drier the further east you go. You also have caretos in Coimbra/Viseu districts. Beira Alta will probably always lag behind Norte when it comes to tourism

Ó, anciã, Mãe! Nossa mágoa é eterna
    Foste esquecida, perdida
    Vossa glória, vossa honra, banida
Mas vosso canto prevalece no fogo e na névoa agreste.
    Destronada e abandonada,
    Por bastardos humilhada,
    Ao esquecimento lançada.

Two reasons, nobody is really from Guarda, and there is a myth that Guarda has some folks in there but I do not believe it.

Now seriously, Guarda doesn't seem to be that much populous and their internal diaspora in Portugal (basicaly in Porto or Lisbon) doesn't seem that large, I even know many Transmontanos who are usualy much more common in Porto and whereabouts but people from Guarda I struggle to know some. Only one known person that I know of. Viseu it depends, it's a much more populous district but it has some "cultural" relations up north with douro and even the inland of Porto region/district (like Baião and stuff like that).

I voted for Beira Baixa and Ribatejo. But I voted at 4 AM or something like that already a bit sleepy, it was only family related because many times the summer in my region is intolerable. I don't know if I would live there. 40º in there is not anything out of ordinary in the areas in between Ribatejo and Beira Baixa.

The village where my family is from is officialy in Ribatejo, in Santarém District but I don't feel like a Ribatejano, for starters I don't like that much Touradas neither the rest of the local population in there, we don't have bulfighting around. The landscape is not like in "hardcore" Ribatexas like Benavente, Santarém, Coruche etc etc it's more green and more mountainous. We are also considered Médio Tejo by NUTS III.

Well let's have some look. The "Municipio" where "my" village is located is Mação.

    Tigelada

    Bolo Finto

Bucho e Maranho (very connected with Sertã, but very popular in Mação too dunno if the original recipe is from Sertã)

Also the accent if you need (???).

It is mostly associated with Sertã but it is traditionally found all over the sub-region Pinhal Interior Sul (Proença-a-Nova, Mação, Oleiros, Sertã, Vila de Rei and Pampilhosa da Serra).

Which one do you prefer, Bucho or Maranho?

I like both, but on the opposite of most people (I guess), I'm inclined to Bucho. Dunno why.
