    I've never visited Trás-os-Montes.

I think most Portuguese will vote for sentimental reasons I am no exception. I prefer Trás-os-Montes from where my roots are, and Douro Litoral where I lived most of my life. But I would say the whole Northern Portuguese region is of my preference, and to be honest it's only where I truly feel at home.

I did not vote for sentimental reasons. I like every single region to be fair but it would have been silly to make the poll and vote in every single region. I really like Estremadura and Douro Litoral as well but I did not vote for them because ideally I would prefer to live in regions with a slower pace that are not as crowded.

Haven't been to Minho, Beiras and Trás-os-Montes.

Seems that many people haven't been to Trás-os-Montes. I think it has been for decades the most isolated region in the country but it has improved with the construction of A24 and Túnel do Marão. Nonetheless, for someone that lives in Lisbon it will take as much time to get into Chaves as it does to Sevilla.

Which regions make up the called "North Portugal"? And why the southern regions are called "Alentejo"? If I'm not mistaken, the first portuguese territories were the northern parts of the actual territories, and the first kings expanded the portuguese frontiers from the north to south. So, "Alentejo" means "down south the Tejo river"?

Every region that is along (usually north of) the Douro river (Douro Litoral, Minho and Trás-os-Montes). Alentejo = Além Tejo (Across the Tejo river).

Technically the south of the Douro is also North, but it's hard to put a label because the whole place is very mountainous (except in Northeast Aveiro) and these extend into what is Central Portugal, yet the villages along the Douro are indistinguishable from one another. Geneaology also shows this, part of my Douro Sul ancestry has ties to the Douro Norte, whereas others have ties to the mountains to the south - particularly in Alto Douro/Beira Alta. In my opinion Central Portugal is a bogus region that is very heterogeneous, Aveiro is very different from Guarda/Castelo Branco, and neither have much to do with Leiria, yet they are all Central.

That said my favourite part of the country is the Douro, Litoral and Alto alike. I also very much like the interior of the Minho region and Trás-os-Montes. The green, foresty and hilly areas of Beira Alta are also cool, the drier ones (mostly in Guarda, or during the summer) I do not like as much. For me flat coastal areas are boring af, the fact that they are cramped with buildings (at least in the north) doesn't help.

Edit: I just noticed only AGUIA and I voted for Douro Litoral. You don't know wtf you're missing, Cinfães is amongst the most beautiful concelhos in the whole country, the missus fell in love with it after visiting. If you like mountains, snow, forest, waterfalls and rivers you've got it all. I advise people to google 'vale do Bestança'.
The Rota do Românico is also totally in Douro Litoral
