Turkish medias report that during the day and even overnight, Greek clerical class gathered their folk in churches, held special processions. Usually chanted by Greeks only at Easter times, exceptionally the Akhitist chant was also performed.

Yunanistanda Ayasofya için ‘yas’ önceki akşam Tinos adasında başladı. Ada meydanında yüzlerce kişinin katılımı ile dualar okundu. Dün de saat 12.00’den itibaren kiliselerde matem çanları duyuldu, kiliselerin önünde bayraklar yarıya indi. Başta Atina Metropol Kilisesi olmak üzere, ülkenin bütün büyük kiliselerinde de özel ayinler yapıldı. Bu ayinlerde, diğer duaların yanı sıra, Bizans döneminde M.S. 600’lü yıllarda Avarlar’ın başarısızlıkla sonuçlanan kuşatması üzerine yazılmış, Meryem Ana’ya şükran ilahisi de okundu.

Honouring the virgin Mary, mother of God, the Chant dates back to the Avar siege of Constantinople in 626. Back then when all hopes were lost, as in addition to the Avars, Sassanid army reached Asian bank of Constantinople, Greek Byzantine monks had tasked themselves to keep up the motivation of resistance. By parading with their icon and chanting this chant, they had resisted to Avars.

The Akathist Hymn is being displayed every Easter for gratitude towards Virgin Mary for the protection of Constantinople from the Avars in 626.

The Greeks paid for Justinian's arrogance.
The Avars struck the first blow. After them others struck: Arabs, Lombards. If Justinian had not humiliated the Avars, the Byzantine Empire would still be alive.

So, you don't like it when another religion appropriates your holy sites?

    Interesting...
