I wouldn't could him off. He has prior success, and not only related to space industry (if you can call it like that).
I think there are two big factor:
1) How will human adapt to live in space for that many months?
The biggest problem is human body is not adapted to life in no-gravity environment. That's why O'Neil cylinder is good solution to create artificial gravity, although this "gravity system" is not like the one we are facing on Earth.
2) How will they adapt to radiation?
On Mars even the ground is radiated, plus basically no athmosphere would leave astronauts exposed to plenty of radiation.
