Google ‘fixed’ its racist algorithm by removing gorillas from its image-labeling tech..

Nearly three years after the company was called out, it hasn’t gone beyond a quick workaround

Google has apologized after its new Photos application identified black people as "gorillas."

On Sunday Brooklyn programmer Jacky Alciné tweeted a screenshot of photos he had uploaded in which the app had labeled Alcine and a friend, both African American, "gorillas."

Image recognition software is still a nascent technology but its use is spreading quickly. Google launched its Photos app at Google I/O in May, touting its machine-learning smarts to recognize people, places and events on its own.

Yontan Zunger, an engineer and the company's chief architect of Google+, responded swiftly to Alciné on Twitter: "This is 100% Not OK." And he promised that Google's Photos team was working on a fix.

Hahahahahaha. Algorithms aren't racist, they just haven' political correctness programmed in them yet. Until they program them with political correctness, they simply see things how they look like. I guess black people happen to look like gorillas to the politically blind algorithm. So much for the idea that "racism" is thought.

Now they actually do have that snucked in, that's what the article is about. Put limitations on the set of sifted pictures and there you go.

I think it's good for humans to look like gorillas, in the same way that it's good for dogs to look like wolves. Gorillas are powerful animals, and I wish I would look more like a gorilla.

Would it be racist if images of huskies would accidentally be classified as images of wolves?

It's offensive towards the species of gorilla how Google said that it's "100% Not OK" to be compared to a gorilla. Imagine if they apologized to whites that their photos were accidentally classified as photos of blacks.
