The issue was not to point at the religion which people most likely inherit from their ancestors.
Actually, you need to follow a bit the evolution of Hungary and the society there.
Protestant minority is roughly 15-20% of Hungary's population, yet they are intellectually leading element. Hungarian nation state, nationalism, Magyarism and even Turkisms you see in that country are the product of that advanced minority.
Catholics are majority in Hungary. Were it for Catholic Hungarians, most likely there would not be a Hungarian state at all to begin with. Hungarian Catholics are known to be strong pro-Vatican group and identifying with the Habsburg party. They are majority in Hungary. They are similar to Islamists in the Middle East or Turkey who don't want nationality, nation-state but want to live as mere subject of Bishops and Clerics, with possibly Habsburg monarch on top of the state hierarchy, ideally.
Though more successful than in Bavaria, Austria or Croatia, the Reform could not really be deeply embedded in Hungary.
Many Turks are confused nowadays, and when they look at modern Catholic conservative Hungary, they can't properly understand how come such a people were producing so strong pan Turanism stuff some 100 years ago.
