In writting i guess portuguese is easier to understand for italians.
Written is another thing, yes, and i personally think that if an italian with a bit of imagination can read and understand decently well the portuguese language

Many words are pretty much the same or look a lot alike, just a few basic examples:

    Terra‐Terra
    Filho‐Figlio
    Olho‐Occhio
    Mundo‐Mondo
    Bandeira‐Bandiera
    Sempre‐Sempre

Romanian is probably the Latin derived language that is the furthest away from other romance languages. Portuguese has the most distinct accent from the Romance languages in my opinion though, it sounds quite rushed and mumbled to an untrained ear. Interestingly there are some articles that claim that Portuguese along with Italian are closer to the ancestral language proto-Romance than the other Romance languages.

For these particular words it is closer to Portuguese than Spanish interestingly, despite closer proximity. In Spanish:

    tierra
    hijo
    ojo
    mundo
    bandera
    siempre

Castilian Spanish is overall closer to italian than portuguese.....BUT some words that in castilian are different than italian, usually for the presence of an "i"(like in "tierra","hierro","sierra") in Portuguese and italian are identical(terra, ferro and serra)

All these words are easily understandable, yet the spelling is a bit different

"Nunca" for example is a real latin leftover from "numquam"...in italian the word for "never" is "mai"....i studied Latin in high school so if i didn't know the meaning of the word i could have guessed it.

Did you study Classical Latin or Vulgar Latin? All modern Romance languages evolved from Vulgar Latin.

Fun fact: italians and the portuguese also share the 25th of april as a date that marked the end of dictatorial regimes in both countries

25th of april 1945: Giorno della Liberazione

25th of april 1974: Carnation Revolution

A dark day in our history, I personally do not celebrate it. What our traitorous rulers did to millions of Portuguese in the former overseas territories should be considered a crime against humanity if we did not live in the world of the politically correct.
