A friend from my city is dating Polish girl whose grandpa fought in Warsaw uprising. Glory to the heroes!

I can say the same thing about Germany as well where many historical landmarks were also either damaged or destroyed by the allied forces, esp in Dresden and Berlin.

Europe really went on a path of destruction there but not all was so sound at the time. Beautiful cities like Amsterdam we see now... they are beautiful because after the war, we knocked a lot of the bad shit over. The whole Joodsche Buurt and the Jordaan and Haarlemmerdijk were nightmare zones that hadn't changed since the 19th century.

Today there is 76th anniversary of Warsaw Uprising



It is very improtant part of history. It is known for the bravery to fight with stronger enemy. Many civilians have been killed and city was ruined. There is a Museum of Warsaw Uprising(I was there and I recommend btw) and many movies. You can also hear the sirens all over the Poland at 5 PM which was the time when it started, called as Godzina W(hour W), to remember about it.

I think bravery is an understatement, idk how they managed to put up such a hard fight and gather the resources they did.

What did Warsaw actually used to look like ? Before the war, I mean. Because after the Uprising it was reduced to rubble.

Of course, travelogues of those days, just like now, only showed the bad sides and didn't go into the alleyways and Hinterhöfe like those who used to be around every German city.

Basically just as I had imagined: a lot of bad areas as well around factories. Just like everywhere else.

In 1980, Warsaw's Old Town was placed on the UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites as "an outstanding example of a near-total reconstruction of a span of history covering the 13th to the 20th century.

Well, I don't find it surprising really since many of Europe's largest cities had hosted many ghettos like in London for example where in Victorian era of that city wasn't so..pleasant really. I mean, what made London into an economic power city was after the war. The same can be said about the many cities in the US including Detroit which was called the Paris of the west in the 40's and 50's before Blacks took over the city and became this post-apocalyptic city that it is city. As they say "there's always a rainbow at the end of the tunnel".

Well, yes. If you were to look at the Borinage in Belgium - you can pretty much see what a lot of industrial cities used to look like.Charleroi comes to mind. Just think away the modern stuff and you come quite close. We really shouldn't over-romanticise things but it's clear that a lot of beauty in other areas was lost as well.

Yeah, esp the old Gothic scenery and even the old Germanic housings as well which I find them to be pretty unique in my opinion.
