A massive explosion shook Lebanon's capital Beirut on Tuesday wounding a number people and causing widespread damage.

The afternoon blast shook several parts of the capital and thick smoke billowed from the city centre. Residents reported windows being blown out and a false ceilings dropping.

The explosion appeared to be centred around Beirut's port and caused wide scale destruction and shattered windows miles away.

An AP photographer near Beirut's port witnessed people wounded on the ground and widespread destruction in central Beirut.

Some local TV stations reported the blast was at Beirut's port inside an area where firecrackers were stored.

The blast wave was charged with water? Has it been a ship, a container in the cargo area or a truck bomb?

That explosion must be equivalent to several hundred kg of tnt, was it an attack or accidental explosion?

I very much doubt that there were no injuries, even deaths, but if the explosion was in a depopulated industrial area, there would not be as many as if it had been in the center of the city.

So I'm inclined to think it was some kind of accidental explosion and not any attack.

btw that does not look like or sound like a fireworks explosion like many people are saying

edit: just saw a video that was more upclose and it actually does look like a fireworks factory explosion.
