The most upgraded defense cooperation between France and Cyprus is in force
A milestone date is August 6, 2020 as Cyprus and France formally activate their new defense agreement which is the most upgraded defense agreement in recent years. According to information it includes:
The reinforcement of the National Guard with new weapons systems. There are discussions on the table about weapons systems that could trigger S-300-like reactions in the late 1990s.
According to reliable sources, the National Guard has set up a plan for an aeronautical upgrade with the aim of halting Turkish action in the Cyprus EEZ by acquiring French systems.
The permanent presence of French aeronautical forces on the island and continuous joint training with the National Guard.
France's defense assistance in case Cyprus is attacked by Turkey.
After the completion of internal procedures came into force on 1 to August 2020, the Defense Cooperation Agreement between the Republic and the French Republic, signed on April 4, 2017.
As the official announcement emphasizes:
This agreement further strengthens and expands the cooperation of the Republic of Cyprus with the French Republic, in the field of defense and security, while at the same time it is an important step towards achieving the common goal of ensuring a stable and secure environment in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The agreement enhances co-operation between the two countries in the fields of energy and maritime security, early warning and crisis management, as well as tackling terrorism and piracy. In addition, at the military level, cooperation in the fields of armaments and defense technology, joint training of military personnel and conducting search and rescue exercises are envisaged.
The Cyprus-France Defense Cooperation Agreement confirms the excellent level of bilateral relations between the two countries and the multifaceted cooperation between them, something that was demonstrated during the recent meeting of Presidents Anastasiadis and Macron in Paris.
The defense cooperation with mutual benefits of two states with common interests in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
