Would West Virginia count? Most of the original settlement came from areas of Virginia and Pennsylvania with very few non-colonial stock Americans. The state remained mostly rural and later turned to coal mining, but it seems that at peak immigration, the total foreign-born population never exceeded 5% of the total. Even these seemed to be mostly concentrated in the coal-mining regions such as McDowell, Harrison and Fayette counties. Interestingly enough, the largest foreign contingent were Italians, and my grandparents lived next door to an Italian-American woman who was born in WV, but her Sicilian-born parents moved to Hartford during the depression. Below are the numbers of foreigners and native-born West Virginians.
