Germans did not have the spiritual motivation to fight to the last man. The Nazi leadership resorted to different tactics to ensure Germans fight to the last.
Soviets did big mistake upon taking first German village ever they took in East Prussia. It was in October 1944. Nemmersdorf.
Likely elements of the Red army raped women and massacred everyone in the village. They also executed around 50 French and Belgium POW's (likely from volunteer SS divisions).
The Nazi propaganda and Goebels used the event, and the stories were spread to all German armies.
It was used to convince German soldiers that they have to fight to death if they don't want to see their own family members raped and killed as well.
We can presume British and US intelligence interfered too.
They probably wanted to avoid Red Army taking over all of Germany, so a German deadly resistance halting a bit the Soviets until allies arrive until Berlin would be good.
When Russians reached East Prussia in late 1944, Allies had just landed at Normandy.
Normandy was organized to prevent Russia from taking all of the Catholic Continental Europe. Since Germans had already lost the war in 1943 after Kursk.

Things like Nemmersdorf reverberated well after the war as what the Soviets had done was used implicitly by Western governments to remind the people of what would happen if the Soviets would ever march West. The result was more than they could have asked for: re-militarisation was total in Western Europe - including in West Germany. Even during the 1970s and 1980s, when both Dutch (with a peacetime strength of 60.000 and a wartime strength of 250.000 to 350.000 out of a population of 14 million by 1980 and with one of their two army corps permanently based in West Germany) and and West Germans enjoyed their bout of long hair and generally relaxed discipline was the level of alertness, professionalism and dedication very high and both countries used the mirage of relaxed discipline for a protracted military build-up. The Western European population were under no illusion that the Soviets would attack first, nuke much of Western Europe and generally behave like they did in Germany in 1944-45. Generally, Western conscripts were willing to fight to the death (because they knew what would happen to their country and family) and Russians were viewed in exactly the same light (and still are - to an extent) as their fathers had viewed the invading Nazi's.
Wake up and smell the coffee.
