Machiavelli should be proud of your cynicism. Here, take a look at what he said: "We can say this of most people: that they are ungrateful and unreliable; they lie, they fake, they're greedy for cash and they melt away in the face of danger."

There's another way. Here's what Hume said: "In all determinations of morality, this circumstance of public utility is ever principally in view; and wherever disputes arise, either in philosophy or common life, concerning the bounds of duty, the question cannot, by any means, be decided with greater certainty, than by ascertaining, on any side, the true interests of mankind."

If 2020 has taught me anything it is that people are far more selfish than I previously thought.

I think I'm more selfish, but can be generous at times. I would say humans are more selfish.

It depends on the person and in what manner. Being generous is something I reserve for close family and people I've known for a long time, but everything with a limit. When inviting someone for dinner or get together I believe in doing the best I can, and as such can be a generous host. I do tend to smile a lot, no harm in that as it's free. But, beyond that I tend to be aloof and suspicious of helping out people in general. Most are scheming and petty, and I adjust myself accordingly. The whole "mi casa es tu casa"- mentality will leave You homeless in this world. Also, in many cultures where hospitality is seen as a virtue, it is often done because people expect something in return.

A good rule to follow in life is never lend or borrow money from people. And guests like fish, stink after 3 days.

The philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer postulated three prime human motivators : self-gain, malice and compassion; of the three he said self-gain is the strongest in at least most people.
