Default The Highway Plan that Almost Destroyed Amsterdam - Plan Jokinen

In the 1960s, it seemed clear that the future was the car. Amsterdam had its own plans about how to make the city more car-friendly. Some of these plans failed, others only partially. Discover how radically different Amsterdam might have been had these plans succeeded.

It's not just Amsterdam. For Utrecht there was the Plan Feuchtinger (thankfully never carried out):

And the Plan Hoog-Catherijne (which destroyed the entire Stationsbuurt - the area around the Central Station and filled the canals around the Southern part of the old city between the old city and the station area.

The Hague has the Prins Bernhardviaduct/Ammunitiehaven (which was set to connect the station area to the Westland) and Schenkviaduct (connecting the Rijswijkseplein area to the planned new neighbourhoods in the cities' north forming part an additional planned ring around the city center ) which destroys large parts of the old city and whose original configuration would have wrecked the entire Southern area of the old city along with the area closer to the train station which once used to be exquisite. They now run smack into the filled in Amsterdamse Veerkade which used to be one of the city's most beautiful canals and Rijswijkseplein respectively. The Hague also rammed the Utrechtsebaan through a beautiful park/estate next to the train station and along with the old train station gutted much of what survived the 3 May 1945 air raid (once a very beautiful area known as the Bezuidenhout - some pictures can be seen here , here, here ).

And here two to show what was lost:

And this is what they built right through it:

The same area today ? Click.

A third and a fourth plan: the Rotterdamsebaan (coming in from the South) and the Leidsebaan (which would have destroyed the last remaining bits of the old Bezuidenhout) were shelved.

Eindhoven and Tilburg executed similar plans in their station area which left widespread destruction in those beautiful 19th century neighbourhoods and, frankly, removed from the face of the earth. Breda also destroyed much of its station area by filling in its canals around the city for a ring road. Weert did too. Etc. etc.

I really think that we should repeat the tunnelling of the A10 near the Zuidas and the A2 around Maastricht in Utrecht as well. There is a motorway box that needs to be done away with. Particularly on its Eastern side where it was slammed through the Amelisweerd forest.
