NSW One Nation leader Mark Latham derides a recent explainer on the Smithsonian museum website describing the flaws of ‘whiteness’ as so “primitive, wrong, and counterproductive”. The article began by declaring “Whiteness and white racialised identity refer to the way that white people, their customs, culture, and beliefs operate as the standard by which all other groups of are compared”. Mr Latham said the document essentially “lumps whole groups” together, disregarding their nationality or differentiating cultures. “It’s the central flaw of identity politics; it doesn’t treat people or even nations, or even communities as separate, as individual, as worthy of their own examination, respect, and treatment”. “To see them now engage in the intellectual activity of pretending that billions of people around the world are all the same because of their skin colour is so primitive, so wrong, and so counterproductive. “For the Smithsonian to do this is a tragedy. This is a betrayal completely of what a place like the Smithsonian … is supposed to be about.” Image: AP
